    DAY 1 - HISTORICAL DAY

The Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum, features the town’s abundant history of the early lumber industry and the town’s roots. Exhibits include logging and milling equipment and old photographs that tell all about Weed’s history. If you don’t think that is enough of a history lesson for you, then take the Weed Main Street Walking Tour. This incredible walking tour starts at the famous Weed Arch and takes you all through downtown Weed, citing many points of interest along the way. Make sure that you stop in at number three on the walking tour, the Weed Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center. Pick up an events calendar, a map or get directions to areas of interest.

Take a tour of the only community college in Siskiyou County. College of the Siskiyous is a fully accredited community college and their motto — A world class education, where the sky is the limit — describes this campus completely. The college has a wide variety of programs and classes available to anyone interested. At any time of year, the COS Performing Arts Theatre will have a show to pique your interest. Every year at Christmastime, the Eugene Ballet Company performs The Nutcracker. There is also a sister campus located in our neighboring town, Yreka. College-bound or not, check out this campus for its sheer beauty. Nestled at the base of Mt. Shasta, College of the Siskiyous is one of the most beautiful community colleges in the world.

While you are in the general direction of College of the Siskiyous, you have to stop at Mt. Shasta Brewery, for a tour and tasting. Traditionally brewed from 100% PURE Mt. Shasta spring water, the brewery features five distinctive beers which are guaranteed to pleasure your palate. Once again proving our town is rich with history, the brewery was retrofitted from the historic Medo-Bel Creamery.

Why not take a minute to enjoy just one of Weed’s three parks? Bel-Air Park is located adjacent to the College of the Siskiyous and right next door to the Mt. Shasta Brewery. It is a 7.1 acre park with a playground, ball field, horseshoe pits, and swimming pool. Weed’s other two parks are located off Highway 97. Charlie Byrd Park (a 7 acre park) has basketball courts, picnic areas, and a playground and is the site for the new Weed Skate Park. The next park down the road is Carrick Park located off Highway 97 on Maple Street. This park is a 3 acre green haven. Not only does it have basketball courts, playground equipment and picnic areas, the trees and year-round creek make this park a wonder to be seen.

Getting hungry? Continue with your tour of Weed’s history by dining at the Hi-Lo Café. This fabulous restaurant has been family owned for over 50 years. Have a dinner special or be lucky enough to be here on the third Friday of the month for the all-you-can-eat Seafood Buffet.

  • DAY 2 - RECREATION DAY

If you’re not looking for a sit-down breakfast and want to get something quick you might pay a visit to one of the many fast food establishments in Weed or get a great pastry and espresso from Ellie’s Espresso & Bakery.

Depending on the season, rent a snowmobile for a few hours at The Fun Factory, Deer Mountain Snowmobile Park. Skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing are available at Mount Shasta Board & Ski Park, also available in the summer for rent to host your own custom event. In warmer weather, spend some time on the green of your choice at one or both of Weed’s golf courses. Weed Golf Club is a links-style layout forming a challenging nine holes coupled with our very own Northern California pristine beauty. This course established in 1927 by Long Bell Lumber Company is open year round, except when the ground is frozen, and also has a clubhouse with snack bar and pro shop. The Lake Shastina Golf Resort is the home of Robert Trent Jones Jr’s “Magnificent Monster”. These 27 holes of championship golf begin with a drive directly towards majestic Mount Shasta, California’s second highest peak. The Resort also includes a PGA professional golf shop, lodging, swimming pool, tennis courts and clubhouse. The Whispering Winds Restaurant & Lava Lounge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in warm, intimate surroundings.

If you want to hike something spectacular, we would suggest Black Butte Trail, located between Weed and Mt. Shasta. The trail to the summit was constructed in the early 1930’s to provide pack animal access to a fire lookout which has been removed. The trail climbs the oldest eruption and switches back between it and the second eruption. Hikers should be in fairly good physical condition, but nowhere along the trail are there signs prohibiting resting or U-turns! Interesting close up views of Black Butte plus great vistas await those who take this trail. You may ask for a trail map at the Weed Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.

If you like to fish, toss a line into Lake Shastina. Public access is located off Jackson Ranch Road. Lake Shastina will provide the avid fisherman with a wide variety of fish. Bass, crape and catfish are your biggest biters. You might get an occasional trout also. You may get a map to this beautiful lake from the Weed Chamber of Commerce. If you need fishing gear, bait or a license you can purchase all of this at 97 Mini Mart, located right on Hwy 97 going towards Lake Shastina. Once you’re at the Lake and you have run out of snacks, you don’t have to come all the way back to town. You can get a multitude of goodies along with home-made sausages at the Shastina Mini Mart, located on Big Springs Road.

Not a golfer? Not a hiker? Don’t want to fish? Want to shop or be pampered? Weed has more than enough entertainment for you. The Weed Mercantile Mall at the end of Main Street has several different shops to browse. Get a milkshake at the Cougar Café while you’re there. Looking for art and knick knacks? Try Swanson Images, River Run Gallery, Lilies & Lattes or Ah Capella’s, all located on Main Street. Need a prescription filled? Stop in at Country Drug. Paul and Vivian have a wonderful display of trinkets to be purchased also. Pick up a picnic basket at D & R Hardware. Don’t forget to stop by Edgewood Custom Interiors. You might just come out with a whole new living room set. Like to thrift store shop? Weed has two right on Main Street, New Life Thrift Store and the Eagle’s Nest. If you haven’t purchased any souvenirs yet, get over to the Shasta View Gift Shoppe & Gallery. Bill and Linne have an excellent selection of souvenirs, not to mention some pretty fantastic art on display. If you want your ‘do, nails or toes done then take yourself over to The Best Little Hair House and let Jody, Deb and the girls take care of you. After you’re done shopping, you might get a bite to eat at Big D’s Bar-b-que.

Weed has plenty of places for your dining pleasure. You can get great pizza, calzones, sandwiches, soup & salad bar at The Pizza Factory. Weed has two authentic Mexican restaurants, Sabor Latino or Dos Amigos. Check out the vegetarian menu at the Buddha Belly Kitchen. You can get a home-style meal at either Hi-Lo Café. We also have the biggest selection of fast food in a 20 mile radius. These include McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell & Subway, all of these located at the south end of Weed.

For your evening entertainment, bring the family and enjoy a game of bowling at Cedar Lanes Bowling Alley, located at 127 Main Street. In between games, enjoy video and pinball games or a game of pool. If you didn’t get enough to eat at one of our many establishments, then you should really try one of the famous space burgers at the snack bar. If you have kids that are really into video games then we are the place for them. They can enjoy playing their games in a comfortable home-like environment at the Kommissar’s Lounge.

  • DAY 3 - EXPLORATION DAY

Grab some breakfast at the place of your choosing and something to pack in the picnic basket you purchased and get ready to explore around the Weed area. If you’re interested in attending a church service, check out one of the seven churches located in town. Stop by the Weed Chamber of Commerce for a list of the churches and their service times. After church head out Hwy 97, about 13 miles to the Living Memorial Sculpture Gardens. A monument to all veterans of all conflicts, located in a peaceful setting, this memorial contains nine metal sculptures and a wall dedicated to the Vietnam War Veterans. A new addition to the Gardens is the Living Memorial Labyrinth, which is wheelchair accessible with aid. The Labyrinth has 5 pathways planned after the sacred labyrinth at Chartres Cathedral in France.

If you think we can’t top that then you need to travel north on Hwy. 97 for about 2 miles to Road A-12. Turn left onto A-12 and travel west for 3 miles looking for the telephone pole on the left hand side of the road marked Pluto Caves in silver letters. Go left 2/10 of a mile to a dirt parking area. Follow the rock edged walkway to the Cave. Pluto Caves was formed by an eruption of basaltic lava which originated from a vent about 8 miles to the northeast, between Deer Mountain and the Whaleback. The lava flow is about 190,000 years old and the first record of its discovery was by a gentleman named Nelson Cash in 1863 while he was gathering stray cattle. Named Pluto’s Cave after the Roman God of the underworld. Local Native Americans used the cave long before, and John Muir visited it and wrote about it in “Steep Trails” in 1888.

On your way back home we recommend that you travel to our surrounding cities and visit the “Must Sees” in their towns. We hope that you have enjoyed visiting Weed as much as we all enjoy living here!
