Spring at Pluto’s Cave

March 11, 2010

~Pluto's Cave~

Just yesterday I went out to Pluto’s Cave for the first time.  We had such a great time!  Juniper trees were budding their berries, sage was begining to flower, the sky was blue, the air was crisp, and it was a wonderful day trip just outside of Weed, CA.  To get ou there hit  Hwy 97  (you can catch 97 right in Weed, CA ) drive about 12 miles out to A-12 turn left, and then about 3 miles on the left there is a power pole with the tiny words that say “Pluo Cave”.  Once there, it’s a nice dirt road, the parking was great, and the trail is wonderfully maintained.  We didn’t see any trash on any of our walks around the park.

The opening of the cave is easy to access with a great trail that leads to a giant hole in the Earth with a somewhat decent trail down the rocky cliff, I’d say it’s an easy hike, my 5 year old had an easy time getting down and in to PLUTO’s CAVE…

We were hoping to find a bat, but all we found was bat poop, guanno~ lots of it~! There was literally inches of poop under our feet ( my kid loved that! I didn’t) and as we walked through these beautiful dens of caves with “sky lights”  and beautiful rock formations, the dust of guanno lingered in the air rising up to the ceiling! I wish we had brought a face mask or bandana to wrap around our mouths and noses, we will next time we go.  It probably didn’t help having our dog charging around the cave happy as can be running from cave opening to cave opening, kicking up all that guanno!!  Happy, Happy dog!

It was a wonderful day, just remember to bring; a flashlight, a face mask, and good shoes!
